Impotence, also defined as Erection problem, is a very common problem which affects most men at least once during their lifetime. The incidence of erectile dysfunction varies with age, and increases in the proportion of affected men, from 7 to 8 %, from 20 to 39 years of age; to 55-60 %, in men older than 70 years; a study in USA reveals. Most of the cases of ED are seen in the age group of 60-69 years. It is estimated that at least 10 million men suffer from chronic impotence in the USA, and that at least 20 million more men have less severe forms of erectile dysfunction associated to age, chronic health problems or psychological problems.

Let us first find out how erection occurs?

How men get an erection?
The male organ contains 2 portions: the corpora cavernosa. The chamber is filled by a spongy tissue. The corpora cavernosa are surrounded by a membrane, called the tunica albuginea. The spongy tissue contains smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, spaces, veins, and arteries. The urethra, which is the channel for urine and ejaculate, runs along the underside of the corpora cavernosa and is surrounded by the corpus spongiosum.

Erection begins with sensory or mental stimulation, or both. Corpora spongiosa gets relaxed after recieving impulses from the brain and blood starts filling up the spaces. The blood creates pressure in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand. The tunica albuginea helps trap the blood in the corpora cavernosa, thereby sustaining erection.Erection is reversed when the muscles of penis contract.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

What are the various impotence causes?
ED is faced by millions of men around the world. Still, not many people know what causes the problem in the first place. If you are one of these people, make sure you read this article fully. Given here is a list of the most common factors that cause erectile problems in men.

There are two groups of ED causes – psychological causes, physical causes, and habitual causes.

Psychological causes
Depression is one of the most common causes of erectile dysfunction. It may cause an otherwise totally healthy individual person to feel that he suffers from ED.

Stress is one of the most common factors that lead to erectile problems in men. Independent of the cause, stress can have a serious effect on your sexual life. Guilt is also a factor in ED. If a man feels that he is not able to satisfy his partner, his self esteem is lowered considerably and he develops a guilty conscience.

Physical factors
ED is also due to some vascular causes. High cholesterol, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure restrict blood flow to various organs in the body.
Diabetes is known to cause artery damage that can make it difficult for a person to achieve an erection. Kidney disease can cause certain chemical changes in the body that can lower a person’s sex drive.Hormonal imbalances also cause impotence. Surgery for diseases like prostate cancer or bladder cancer usually involves the removal of nerves and tissues in and around the affected area. This can lead to erectile problems as well.

Smoking is one of the main erectile dysfunction causes. Prolonged smoking affects blood circulation and restricts blood flow to the penis.
